Knapp Creek (Blue River, WI)

As Liz mentioned, the morning started out rainy. We adapt, however. A return to the pool, hot tub and sa-oo-na (sauna) absorbed some time and we headed out for our 40 mile trek to my mom (Lianne) and George’s “cabin” at their property between Muscoda and Boscobel.
The trip started out damp at around 11am, but it never really rained even though it had been pouring all morning. The roads were wet and traffic was light. Our bikes have fenders, so any mist or spray from the road wasn’t any issue at all for us. Overall, we both remarked at how pleasant it was. We decided to stay south of the river, except for a nice little venture up into the highlands above Avoca, WI. This turned out to a fantastic little trip up a valley, a steady climb and later descent.

Here you can see our route for the day:

A few notable moments were the several leisurely stops to eat and drink. One at a bridge west of Spring Green, another at a convenience store in Avoca, and a third after our stop at the IGA (Pierce’s Market) in Muscoda. At the latter stop, we picked up 3 lbs of red potatoes (part of our 2:00 pm plan for dinner), cheese for sandwiches, gatorade (on sale for 75 cents) and lots of other goodies.

After about 3:30 hours in the saddle and just a hair over 40 miles (3 miles too far for Liz), we pulled into the Knapp Creek driveway, found the key and settled inn.

After unpacking the bikes, we ran down to the spring-fed creek and cleaned up — it’s always a brisk 65-70 degrees and moves at a pretty good clip. I was forced to take several running leaps into the creek off the 3-4 foot high banks.

We made dinner (potatoes roasted on the grill, velveeta shells and cheese and bush’s vegetarian baked beans) and had just enough energy for this blog post.

Tomorrow, again, it will be near 100 degrees. As such, we’ve decided to forgo a trek into unknown territory north towards Wildcat Mountain State Park. Instead, we’ll take our empty bikes into Boscobel and hit the library (for air conditioned reading), a coffee shop and/or dairy queen, and finally a grocery store where we’ll pick up a 5 pound bag of ice and goodies for the night’s dinner. When we get back, we’ll rinse and repeat and take stock of the situation then.

Sorry there weren’t any real pictures — they are on the phones and AT&T has no data coverage here.
