Without the confluence of a both WiFi connection and the motivation to navigate the archaic way these blog posts are composed, we’ve started to go back and fill in some gaps.
On Wednesday night, we popped in to a nice little campsite after our three day excursion to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. For all practical purposes it appears to be run on the honor system, but the owner and host was very engaging and was giving tours to prospective campers. At no time did she ask for our name or car license plates or even assign us to a specific site. Not that the sites are numbered or otherwise categorized. I imagine things might get a bit crazy in the high-volume months of July and August but for a campground that was about twenty minutes from downtown Reykjavic, it was surprisingly chill.
After breakfast and a bit of drying out, we headed in to Reykjavik to explore a bit. This was our first legit visit — other trips in were for targeted assault on a camping supply store and a grocery store — and we easily parked started walking around. We saw some stuff.
Like this view of the city’s beautiful lutheran church from the outdoor sculpture garden populated with works from Einar Jónsson.
We stumbled in the city’s administration building which housed a great model of all of Iceland. It was fun to mentally sketch out all of our driving, which was limited to the section in the foreground. That and nice bathrooms and free WiFi! Three days of photos sync’d to the cloud in ten minutes.
Next we decided to splurge and grab some grub. A vegan restaurant that was also a vinyl record shop. Spinning some cool tunes and writing a few postcards. FWIW, this was our first meal out for the entire trip.
A few hours in the city was making us tired so we headed out into the ‘burbs of southeast to explore a bit. We found what we think is a scout camp of some sort and played with all of their toys.
Fun stuff. Ping pong anyone?
