Wildcat Mountain to Devil’s Lake

Originally the day was supposed to end at Mirror Lake, but throughout the day I had a secret alternate agenda that I would put forth at the right moment. More on that later.

We started out with a huge downhill which deposited us at the floor of a beautiful valley on County F. F is for fun! We rode 4-5 miles at a slight uphill grade and we were really enjoying it — until we turned a corner and quite a big climb ensued. F no longer was for fun, at least for Liz. I honestly have never seen her so upset after finishing a climb.

Anyway, the climb was a good thing because it put us on top of a ridge, and we were to follow ridge road — always a great route choice once you’re already on the ridge. This turned out to be a great road too. We passed lots of friendly Amish people who we obviously have a natural kinship with because we are riding thousands of dollars of bicycles and equipment and bright flashy synthetic clothing. It’s very similar to their horse and buggy.

Eventually we were deposited down into Hillsboro, where we had elevensies, and connected up to the “400” trail. At that time it was starting to get hot on our way to Reedsburg. This trail was nice, with lots of beautiful bluffs carved out by the Baraboo River in it’s mightier years.

At about 2:30 we arrived in Reedsburg, and that’s when I decided to spring the alternate agenda on Liz. Oh so subtly working my ways, she took the bait hook line and sinker. Originally a 50 mile day, with 8-9 miles left, we now were on a 60 mile day with 20 or so left.

No problem, we stopped at the IGA and picked up dinner supplies and other essentials — although we did not feel the need to replace the Mac & Cheese consumed the night before, as we still had a backup and the trip ends tomorrow.

So, long story short, Liz did great and we didn’t violate too many laws getting through Baraboo and into Devil’s Lake. The route turned out nice, except for a bit of a hike/roll along the side of that new freeway they’ve built north of Baraboo.

Incidentally, Baraboo, you’ve joined Sparta, WI on Liz’s )()*$% list.
